travel insurance explained

Travel insurance is there to give you cover in case of any major issues you may face whilst abroad. There are a number of different types of cover you can receive with your travel insurance. It is paramount that you choose the right policy for you.

Different types of travel insurance

There are 3 determining factors regarding which type of travel insurance cover you will receive. It will depend on where in the world you intend to travel to, where in the world you are visiting. And also how many trips you are planning to make within a 12 month period.

Annual vs single trip cover

Annual cover is the ideal option for those who intend to make more than 2 trips within 12 months. On the other hand, single trip cover is the more ideal option for those who are intending on taking one or two holidays within a 12 month period.

Travelling with medical conditions

If you are travelling with any sort of pre-existing medical condition. It is important that you have the right cover. Therefore you will need to provide your travel insurance provider with any details regarding your medical condition. This will allow them to see if they can give you the cover that you need.

What does travel insurance cover?

Depending on what policy you have in place, you may have cover for different things. Here is a list of common types of travel insurance cover.

Covid-19 Cover

Having covid-19 cover is almost essential in todays current climate. Having to isolate, or be locked down in a foreign country is a daunting thought for most people. Therefore it is important to have the right policy in place for you as most providers are different.

Personal Liability Cover

Personal liability cover is one of the less frequently used forms of travel insurance cover. Essentially personal liability cover will provide you with cover in the event you have to face any sort of legal bills whilst abroad.

Personal Belongings And Money

Most travel insurance policies will provide you with cover (up to a certain amount). For things such as lost or stolen baggage and belongings. However, you should be aware of the fact that most companies will only provide a maximum pay out of £200 – £500 per lost or stolen item.

Emergency Medical Cover

Emergency medical cover tends to be one of the main reasons people take out a travel insurance. Being hospitalised abroad can be a costly affair. The costs can range up into the hundreds of thousands, especially when travelling to places like the USA. Also, as stated previously, it is of paramount importance that you disclose any pre-existing medical conditions with your travel insurance provider. If you are not 100% transparent with your insurance provider, there is a possibility that they may refuse to pay out.

Missed Departure, Cancellation and Curtailment

Depending on the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy, your provider may pay you compensation if you have to cancel or curtail your trip abroad due to a number of reasons. However, most providers will only provide cover for reasons such as illness or bereavement. You will be covered for a missed departure if you miss your flight due to public transport being late or cancelled. Unfortunately waking up late for your flight does not warrant a pay out.

Additional travel insurance options

If you would like to add more cover onto your existing plan, there are a few more options for you.

Wedding Cover – This will provide extra cover for wedding gifts, rings and dresses.

Travel Gadget Insurance – This can cover you for loss/theft and damage for your electronic devices.

Hazardous Activities – Taking part in any sort of extreme sports, such as skydiving or paragliding will usually require extra cover from your insurance provider.

Terrorism Cover

Travel Disruption

Natural Disaster Cover

Travel Connection Delays
